Personal Thoughts:

Years ago when I created my science guides designed for individual use, I

was so torn when I came to Physics as to what books were best that I created 3 different options! (So, that may be something you want to look at! 3 for 1!) Those guides have served us and many, many others well over the years.

However, when it came time to create a Group Guide for high school Physics I took all that I knew then, and all that I know now and compiled into one study what I have settled on being the best: a truly High School level course with space to flex up (dependent on your particular student  needs, or space to flex down (again depending on your particular students. For the Red-Brick model it is important to us to be able to rotate students into our high school studies at any point in the rotation, this means that in any given year this Physics class may have some 9th graders along with a couple of seniors. Can a Physics course meaningfully connect to both ages ranges and abilities simultaneously? The answer is yes, if it is truly living and if we embrace Charlotte Mason’s philosophy.

Classical physics, Modern Physics, Theoretical Physics, it’s all here. In this study students get the best living books have to offer in both narrative and technical content, they narrate orally and on paper, they get the formulas alongside the ideas, they get carefully gleaned Youtube videos, an emphasis on the vocabulary of physics, in-class science demonstrations, guidance and instruction in keeping a science journal, opportunities to research, 3 term exams aligned to state standards, a paper to write at the end of the year, plus a PBS mini-series (you guys know I love the science series!!).

This guide is geared towards a there-but-light take on the maths, however the content is present if you want your crew to go deeper. At the end of the year we join modern physicist in their conversation and search for a Unified Theory, a “theory of everything”, and wonder through a guided conversation about what parts of this drive point towards God/ a Creator/ the supernatural.

Guys, it’s a great year of conversations and understandings. I’m excited for you!

Teacher Notes:

This guide is designed for a single day of class reading and activities, and 3 days at home. One home day is focused on assigned journaling, the other 2 on reading and narrating a second stream of thought that informs the class work/ reading. See Schedule of the week to see this simplified.

This guide could also be used in a home setting providing one day per week with mom and three independent days of work.

The teacher instructions are super simple and streamlined. They assume that the teacher takes the Charlotte Mason posture and follows the Charlotte Mason lesson arc. If you would like more details about these things please purchase the “Teacher Toolbox” in the store. This code will give you 50% off __________.

Students should be given their own set of papers at the start of each term in order to be more self-sufficient with homework. The student set is colored and leaves out the class work details in order to preserve some mystery(!) and also give you room to flex within the year.

Book Apology:

Of course I am a book nerd, in particular: non-fiction; to be even more specific: Science; and to narrow it down even more: Physics!! And so, the books I have chosen here were carefully chose from quite a large pile! Many did not make the cut. One of the key spines for this student is a vintage living book called “The Romance of Physics”, as I type this it is currently selling for $65. It may increase! I would love to see it get picked up by a company for republishing, until then – please don’t let the price be a deterrent! It is available online on archives and so could be printed for class use?

In either case, the total cost of books per student still tends to be on the low side of what most people pay for a single textbook. For school groups, make the investment on the front end and then let your group cycle through and reuse these gems. Let this be part of your blessing to families.

We find ourselves up against the same dilemma Charlotte Mason found herself in, the good books are expensive. It is cheaper to lecture they said; it is cheaper to buy twaddle they compromised… buying the good books if where philosophy meets practice. I wrangled with the decision to create a demand for this book, and a possible burden on families – and in the end couldn’t find a substitute that fit the bill so perfectly.

I’m sorry and you are welcome all at the same time!
