A new 6 session study for families and communities!!

Personal Thoughts:

At back of all of Charlotte Mason’s methods and practices there was a particular philosophy, along with a particular idea she rejected; the secular/ sacred dichotomy, as we call it now. She applied this understanding to all of life, but most famously she applied it to education – which she believed, due to this understanding, should be a life!

Charlotte Mason had her epiphany while looking at a piece of art. Let’s see if we can trace that thought throughout history by looking at many pieces of art. And more importantly, learn to “read” the art we will come into contact with in the future.

Look at and create conversations around art from:

- The Greeks

- The Romans

- The Byzantines

- The Middle Ages

- The Renaissance & Reformation

- The Enlightenment

- The Romantics

- The Hudson River School

- The Impressionists

Teacher Notes:

  • This study requires the purchase of the book:

      “Saving Leonardo” by Nancy Pearcy

  • This is a great conversation to have in a small group as a family or class, or as a co-op, school or church group.
  • There are 6 sessions, with an exam prompt. (You could divide the readings into more if desired.)
  • Each session can last anywhere from 15 – 30 minutes.
  • All art referenced can be found in the book (I provide the page numbers!), as well as adult sized expansions of the thoughts.
  • An additional digital file of art pictures will be emailed to you within 24 hours of purchase. Keep an eye out.
  • For each session, tell them to “listen, with the idea of telling back”, read aloud the portion, and follow the narration prompts. For the review narrations that happen a couple of weeks in, I show the various pictures as a cue to hear what they can tell. This provides a nice visual re-enforcement. At the end of the study, use the exam prompts either orally or as a written assignment for older kids!

This was an amazing conversation for us. I’d love to hear how it goes for you!
